Original Incense and Raku - IMG_2543

“Let my prayer be set as incense before you,
and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice”
–Psalms 141:2

On impulse I took the above photo with my iPhone one day recently just before my morning meditation. Sometimes those things done with the least planning or effort become the source for future paintings that will expand and solidify that one moment into forever.

So, why will this make a great painting?
Love the way the raku vases beautifully frame the subject while creating interesting negative space and smooth contrast of values from darks to lights. Then there is the subtle shimmering nuances of warm reds and cool blues throughout the background and in the vases. The texture on the vases lends another element of interest, as do the subtle shadows in the background.  Finally, oil paint is a medium that lends itself well to creating luminous transparency and depth. I’m sure as I work on the painting there will be more hidden treasures to discover and bring to full fruition.

One brief moment in time can be full of so many wonderful possibilities…
